So… What Does a Doula Actually Do?

If you’re pregnant and keep hearing the word “doula” but aren’t totally sure what it means — you’re not alone. I’ve been there too.

I’m Alysse — a nurse and doula, a mom to a busy one-year-old, and a birth support person here in Northern Michigan. And I want to clear a few things up.

First things first: I’m not your doctor or midwife.

I don’t catch babies or make medical decisions. But I do show up with calm energy, comfort tools, and the kind of support that helps you feel grounded — even when things get intense.

Here’s what I do as a doula:

  • Get to know you and your birth preferences ahead of time

  • Stay by your side during labor, offering emotional and physical support

  • Help you manage contractions with massage, position changes, breathing, and more

  • Make sure your partner feels involved and confident

  • Help you understand your options, ask questions, and feel heard

  • Cheer you on, and remind you that you’re doing an amazing job

I Believe in Physiologic Birth — But I’m Here for Your Birth

I deeply believe in the strength and beauty of physiologic birth — and I also know that every person, every baby, and every labor is different. My role isn’t to push one way of birthing, but to support your way with education, presence, and trust. Whether you’re planning an unmedicated birth, hoping for an epidural, or preparing for a cesarean, I’m with you.

Why does any of this matter?

Because whether anyone has told you or not, birth is a big deal.
And you deserve to feel supported — not just medically, but emotionally and physically too. That’s what I’m here for.

If you’re curious about what it would look like to have a doula by your side, let’s talk. I offer free consults (virtual or in person), and I’d love to hear more about what kind of birth experience you’re hoping for.
